With no doubt, periosteum is the tissue employed in most instances to repair loss of substance of the trachea due to invading tumors or traumatisms.

Whe have carried out an experimental study in 30 Wistar rats, in which we have employed periosteum from endochondral ossification (tibia) and intramembranous (calvaria) ossification, that have been used with different orientation whith respect to the tracheal lumen.

Whe have quantified the amount of produced calcium by means of photocolorimetric method. We conclude that grafts from tibia produce an amount of bone 5-6 fold greater than grafts from calvarium, therefore, the former are more adequate to be employed in tracheal surgery, provided that they produce a more marked and early stabilization in the grafted zone.
