We study 135 patients who were submitted to fiberendoscopic exploration with biopsy and/or sample taken for citologic study because of severe hemoptysis, with the purpose of ruling out the relevant etiology.

After performing a comparative study of endoscopic and microscopic flndings, we concluded that the early exploration of the tracheobronchial tree is highly useful in determining the topographic localization of the hemoptoic process (65.21%) and the microscopic study enabled to determine its etiology in an important number of patients, in whom the direct examination did not show any evidence of alteration responsible of the bleeding. Tumors (29.62%), bronchitis (16.29%) and pulmonary tuberculosis (12.59%) were the most frequent findings.
