In an attempt to determine the frequency with which the lungs are affected as a result of injury to the thorax and the role in which lung involvement plays in the prognosis, the authors reviewed 158 cases.

The study was divided in two groups: group A including cases with severe injuries and initially treated in the intensive care unit and group B including cases treated in the Service of thoracic surgery only. The incidence of lung affectation was 70.9% for the whole series.

Pulmonary contusion was found in 87.5% of group A and 25.3% of group B.

Based on the results, the authors recommend useful therapeutic measures.
