Summary

During 1539 days the authors studied the influence of 8 meteorologic variables on the 10326 patients ad-mitted to the National Instituto of Silicosis (Oviedo) during this period. Of all the patients admitted, 82.5% had as their principal or only pro-blem that their chronic obstructive pulmonary disease had become more acute.

The authors found that two meteorologic situations (P < 0.05) had an influence on the number of patients admitted (and therefore on the number of processes becoming more acute): namely, cold anticyclons and periods with no wind.

Although a mathematical formula for predicting the number of patients admitted could be made with these meteorologic parameters, it was not very useful as other factors (infection, contamination, etc.) not included in this study, also play a role in the fluc-tuations of this disease.
