Summary

In a retrospective review of the radiographies of the thorax made for 96 consecutive patients with hepatic cirrhosis admitted to the Hepatology Department, the existence of pleural effusion in 20% of the same was verified. In the majority of the cases, the characteristics of the effusion were those corresponding to transudate and it was considered to be due to the pass of ascitic liquid to the pleural cavity. In 3 cases the liquid was an exudate and was due to a cause other than hepatic cirrhosis. Other radiological changes observed with variable frequency, were laminar atelectasis and diaphragmatic elevation.
