With the purpose of establishing in our medium the preva lence of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in patients with pul monary embolism (PE) and specificity and sensitivity of clinical signs, we performed a prospective study over a period of 15 months including all patients diagnosed of PE by high proba bility lung sean and/or positive pulmonary angiography in our department. The diagnostic test employed was the gold standard for DVT: contrast phlebography.

Sixty three patients were diagnosed of PE. Phlebography was performed in 46/63 (73%), which was the group considered for the present study. DVT prevalence was 83%, 15% corresponding to DVT in the sural territory. Sensitivity of clinical semiology of DVT was 42% and specificity 87%.
