Summary

In the authors' environment, tuberculous pleurisy is one of the most frequent causes of pleural effusion. Out of 680 patients for whom pleural biopsies were made in a Department of Internal Medicine, 310 were found to have tuberculosis. The histological diagnosis was established in 236 cases. In 157 patients the culture of the biopsy and/or liquid and/or sputum, was positive for Mycobacteria T. The diagnosis was exclusively clinical and evolutive for 39 patients.

The authors compare the results obtained with those of other series described in medical bibliography, and insist, just like other authors, in the bacteriological study of the pleural biopsy which permits a higher yield from this exploration.

Finally, the authors insist on the necessity of combining various bacteriological and histological studies in order to form a certain diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy.
