Summary

By studying very simple and repeatable parameters of the spirogram at rest one can obtain information on the mechanisms of regulation of respiration. The most differentiated parameters are average inspiratory flow and average inspiratory time. In the present paper the limits of normal ity for these parameters were established (average inspiratory flow, average 0,361 1/sec, and standard deviation 0,082, and inspiratory time, average 1,745” and standard deviation 0,522), which were compared with those obtained in different groups of patients. Of these groups of patients the group that showed values furthest from normality were those suffering from emphysema (0,615 and 1,07 respectively), followed by intrinsic asthma and chronic obstructive bronchopneumopathy. The analysis of these parameters as considered to be simple, repeatable and useful, in the clinical study of the regulation of respiration.
