Summary

A total of 1,496 sputum sent to the laboratory for culture of M. tuberculosis were classified into seven subgroups based on the degree of bucopharyngeal contamination according to the microscopic criteria proposed by the American Society for Microbiology.

Of. the 153 strains of M. tuberculosis that were isolated, 43 (28.1 %) carne from sputum with great buccopharyngeal contamination (subgroups 1 and 2); and 89 (58.2 %) from sputum with scarse or nuil contamination (subgroups 3, 4 and 5). The differences in the number of isolations of both groups are statistically significant (x2 = 14.39 P < 0.01). However, no clinical laboratory is authorized to reject sputum with high degree of buccopharyngeal contamination destined to the culture of M. tuberculosis as the global proportion of isolations in this group of samples is of 7.1 %.
