Summary

The authors review eleven cases of pulmonary infections by anaerobes, three associated with empyema. The bacteriological diagnosis was made by analysis of samples obtained by transtracheal punction or the pleural exúdate. They comment on the predisposing factors and some clinical and radiológical data of particular interest. In the light of the results the authors emphasize that the treatment of choice is antibiotic, reserving surgical treatment for cases of empyema and for determined underiying conditions.
