Abstract

The sign of Leser-Tre´lat is rare. It is defined as the sudden eruption of multiple seborrheic keratoses caused by a malignancy. Because both seborrheic keratoses and cancer are common in the elderly, it is not always easy to tell from the literature or in any given patient if this sign is present. In fact, its validity has been questioned. Its association with malignant acanthosis nigricans is one of several of its features that support its legitimacy as a true paraneoplastic disorder.

Another argument against eponyms is controversy surrounding the initial discovery of a disease or structure; in fact, in some instances, longstanding eponyms have been mistakenly attributed to the wrong person, thereby leading to misnomers. For instance, the Leser-Trélat sign, a term for seborrheic keratoses associated with malignancy is mistakenly attributed to German and French surgeons despite being discovered by another German scientist, Hollander in 1900 [3,4]. In addition, medical eponyms named for Nazi physicians and scientists, such as “Reiter syndrome” and “Wegner disease”, have largely fallen out of favor due to their highly controversial backgrounds [5,6 – 8].
