En seis broncografías de asmáticos se ha encontrado un aspecto broncográfico de espasticidad en el lado donde se ha introducido la sonda mientras que los bronquios del lado contralateral, rellenos por rebosamiento o desde la tráquea, es decir sin introducción de la sonda, aparecen prácticamente normales.
Se interpreta este hecho como un reflejo incitado por la punta de la sonda, de aparición rápida y probablemente transitorio, poco prolongado. Este reflejo se extendería a partir del punto excitado primero al lóbulo afecto y posteriormente a todo el pulmón sin alcanzar,o haciéndolo infrecuentemente, al pulmón contralateral. Esto significaría que los reflejos de origen vagal invocados en el origen de la broncoconstricción por Gold y Nadel no son sólo centrales, sino que pueden producirse localmente.
The bronchographies of 6 asthmatic patients showed a bronchospastic image on the side the probe had been introduced; while the contralateral bronchi, which had been filled either by over-flowing or via the trachea —without a probe— were practically normal. The spams were interpreted as a reflex induced by the point of the probe, of sudden appearance and short duration. The reflex travelled form the irritated site to the affected lobe and finally involved the whole lung, without, however, involving the contra-lateral lung. This indicates that the vagal reflexes mentioned by Gold and Nadel in the origin of bronchoconstriction are not only central but may be local as well.
