To investigate the influence of inspired volume and diffusive mixing in the airway on the anatomical dead space (VDan), 45 maneuvers of single respiration were carried out in a normal individual with two groups of inspired volumes: 1,2 and 2,4 liters, and different preinspired volumes. VDan, measured with He and SF6 by the Fowler method, showed a positive correlation with pulmonary volumes increase, favoring the mixing of the lighter gas (He); thus, when volume increases, the value of dead space with He separates more from that measured with SF6.
