In this paper we report the most important findings observed in patients with extrinsic allergic alveolitis induced by avian antigen, studied in the last two years. Our results, from the clinical, radiological, functional and morphological stand points are similar to those described elsewhere. However, in our serie stand out: 1) High predilection for females (5:1) and high association with puerpery. 2) Elevated titers of rheumatoid factor; increase of HLA-B 15 and HLA-DR 7 phenotypes; decrease of suppressor activity; these findings suggest the presence of autoimmune phenomena. 3) In 25% of the patients we detected presence of fibrosis measured morphologically and biochemically, which suggests that this is not an «innocent» disease as usually has been considered.
