In an attempt to determine the usefulness of cerebral computed tomography during the initial stages of bronchogenic carcinoma the clinical histories of 96 patients with bronchogenic carcinoma were reviewed. There was a high index of cerebral metastasis (22%); 8% of patients without neurological symptoms presented silent cerebral metastasis. The lack of consensus in the literature on systematic CT for the staging of pulmonary carcinoma is discussed. The authors conclude that CT is a useful method in patients with operable bronchogenic carcinoma or small cell carcinoma.
