To assess possible alterations of the mucociliary function in several respiratory diseases in which this dysfunction might directly or indirectly participate, we measured nasal mucociliary clearance by means of the saccharin test in 100 patients. Ten patients had bronchial asthma, 50 allergic rhinitis, 30 chronic limitation of airflow, and 10 patients had bilateral bronchiectasis. Data were compared with a control group of nonsmoker healthy volunteers with a mean age similar to patients. Patients with bilateral bronchiectasis showed the most altered nasal mucociliary clearance with respect to control group (58±6 min vas 23±15 min, p < 0,001). In cases of stable allergic rhinitis the mean values appear significantly delayed with respect to Controls (22±10 min vs 12±6 min p < 0,05). Patients with bronchial asthma and chronic limitation of airflow did no/evidence alterations in nasal mucocitary clearance by the saccharin test (17±8 min and 31±10 min, respectively) in comparison with Controls (23 ±15 min and 3±16 min, respectively).
