A comparative study between oxygen partial pressure obtained by arterial puncture (PaO2) and by a transcutaneous oxygen pressure electrode (PtcO2) was carried out; the measurements were simultaneously made before and after fibrobronchoscopy in 16 patients with different types of respiratory diseases.

The fibrobronchoscopy resulted in a reduction of PaO2 from the previous values (F = 8,97; p < 0,01); this decrease was not found with PtcO2 (F = 0,1; p = ns). There were differences in the individual responses to the test with both methods. There was poor concordance between PaO2 and PtcO2, both at the beginning and at the end of the investigation.

We think, therefore, that the transcutaneous oxygen measurement cannot be substituted for the arterial measurement in the gasometric evaluation of adult respiratory patients undergoing fíbrobronchoscopy.
