Twenty-two children from chronic respiratory tract infections, 13 females and 9 males between 6 months to 12 years were found to have serum alpha-l-antitrypsin levels ranging from 17.1-290 mg/dl as compared with control 205-440mg/dl. There was a significant difference (p<0.01) between the children with chronic respiratory tract infections and control. Since the patients with decreased alpha-l-antitrypsin had a pattern of disease which distinguished them from control group, it could be concluded that serum levels of alpha-l-antitrypsin is an important factor in the pathogenesis of chronic pulmonary
